Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

When you eat something tasty in a Chinese-speaking setting, you often want to do more than describe the food: you want to praise the person who cooked it. In Mandarin, that means using a small set of everyday patterns. The most common compliment is 好吃 (hǎochī), literally 'good to eat'. To make it warmer, add 真 (zhēn) or 很 (hěn). To praise the cook directly, use 你做得真好 (nǐ zuò de zhēn hǎo) or 你是个好厨师 (nǐ shì ge hǎo chúshī). This lesson gives you five useful phrases, a simple pattern, and a short dialogue so you can respond naturally at a home meal or a small gathering.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that food is delicious using 好吃 and 真好吃.
    • praise the cook directly with 你做得真好 and 你是个好厨师.
    • respond politely when someone praises my cooking.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    好吃。

    It's delicious.

    hǎo chī

The most basic compliment for food. Use it after taking a bite. 好 (hǎo) means 'good'; 吃 (chī) means 'eat'.

    真好吃!

    It's really delicious!

    zhēn hǎo chī

Adds 真 (zhēn) 'really' for enthusiasm. Common at home meals and casual restaurants.

    你做得真好。

You cook really well. / You did a great job making this.

    nǐ zuò de zhēn hǎo

Directly praises the cook. 你 (nǐ) 'you', 做 (zuò) 'make/cook', 得 (de) links the verb to the评价, 真好 'really good'.

    你是个好厨师。

    You are a great cook.

nǐ shì ge hǎo chú shī

A clear compliment about someone's cooking skill. 是 (shì) 'are', 个 (ge) general measure word, 好 (hǎo) 'good', 厨师 (chúshī) 'cook/chef'.

    谢谢,你喜欢就好。

Thank you, I'm glad you like it.

xiè xie, nǐ xǐ huan jiù hǎo

A modest reply when someone praises your cooking. 喜欢 (xǐhuan) 'like', 就好 (jiù hǎo) 'that's good enough'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To praise food, use 好吃 (hǎochī). To make it stronger, put 真 (zhēn) or 很 (hěn) before it: 真好吃 (zhēn hǎochī) 'really delicious', 很好吃 (hěn hǎochī) 'very delicious'. To praise the cook, use 你 + 做 + 得 + 真/很 + 好: 你做得真好 (nǐ zuò de zhēn hǎo) 'you cook really well'. You can also name the dish: 这个菜你做得真好 (zhège cài nǐ zuò de zhēn hǎo) 'you made this dish really well'. If you want to say someone is a good cook, use 你是个好厨师 (nǐ shì ge hǎo chúshī).

    When to use it

Use 好吃 when you are talking about the food itself, especially right after tasting it. Use 你做得真好 when you want to thank or encourage the person who cooked, such as a family member, friend, or host. Use 你是个好厨师 when you want to compliment someone's overall cooking skill, not just one dish. At a very formal dinner, 好吃 is still fine, but 你做得真好 may sound more personal; you can soften it with 真的 (zhēnde) 'really'. If someone praises you, reply 谢谢,你喜欢就好 (xièxie, nǐ xǐhuan jiù hǎo) to sound modest and warm.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    这个菜真好吃!你做得真好。

This dish is really delicious! You cook really well.zhè ge cài zhēn hǎo chī! nǐ zuò de zhēn hǎo.
    B

    谢谢,你喜欢就好。

Thank you, I'm glad you like it.xiè xie, nǐ xǐ huan jiù hǎo.
    A

    你是个好厨师。

You are a great cook.nǐ shì ge hǎo chú shī.
    B

    哪里哪里,我还在学。

You flatter me, I'm still learning.nǎ lǐ nǎ lǐ, wǒ hái zài xué.

A little context goes a long way

In many Chinese-speaking homes, praising the cook is a common way to show appreciation. 好吃 is safe and friendly. 你做得真好 is warmer and more personal. 你是个好厨师 is a strong compliment; use it when you mean it. A modest reply like 谢谢,你喜欢就好 or 哪里哪里 is normal and does not mean the cook dislikes the praise. At a restaurant, you usually praise the food, not the chef, unless the chef is present.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 你是好吃 to mean 'you are delicious'.

Try this instead: 好吃 describes food, not people. To praise a person, say 你做得真好 (nǐ zuò de zhēn hǎo) or 你是个好厨师 (nǐ shì ge hǎo chúshī). For example, say 这个菜真好吃 (zhège cài zhēn hǎochī) for the dish, and 你做得真好 for the cook.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'This is really delicious' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    这个真好吃。

这个 (zhège) means 'this', 真 (zhēn) means 'really', and 好吃 (hǎochī) means 'delicious'. You can also say 这个很好吃 (zhège hěn hǎochī) with 很 instead of 真; both are correct.

2Your friend cooked dinner. Which phrase directly praises your friend as a cook?

    Show a sample answer

    你做得真好。

你做得真好 (nǐ zuò de zhēn hǎo) praises the person's cooking action. 你是个好厨师 (nǐ shì ge hǎo chúshī) also works and praises overall skill. 好吃 alone only describes the food.

3Someone says 你做得真好 to you. What is a polite, modest reply?

    Show a sample answer

    谢谢,你喜欢就好。

谢谢,你喜欢就好 (xièxie, nǐ xǐhuan jiù hǎo) means 'Thank you, I'm glad you like it.' It is warm and modest. 哪里哪里 (nǎlǐ nǎlǐ) is also a common modest reply.

    Take this with you

Use 好吃 for the food, 你做得真好 or 你是个好厨师 for the cook. Add 真 or 很 to sound warmer, and reply with 谢谢,你喜欢就好 when you are praised.
