Forming Yes/No Questions in Mandarin Chinese with 吗 (ma)
Learn to turn statements into simple yes/no questions in Mandarin using 吗 (ma), and answer them naturally with 是 (shì) or 不 (bù).

In Mandarin Chinese, you do not change word order or add a helping verb like English 'be' or 'do' to make a yes/no question. Instead, you usually keep the sentence exactly as it is and add the question particle 吗 (ma) at the end. This lesson teaches you how to form these questions and how to answer them naturally. You will also learn that Chinese often repeats the main verb in answers, and that 是 (shì) and 不 (bù) do not work the same way as English 'yes' and 'no'.
By the end, you can…
- turn a simple statement into a yes/no question by adding 吗 (ma).
- answer a yes/no question naturally by repeating the verb or using 是 (shì) and 不 (bù).
- ask and answer simple questions about readiness, likes, and identity.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

你好吗?
How are you? / Are you well?
nǐ hǎo ma?
A greeting question. The literal meaning is 'Are you well?'
你准备好了吗?
Are you ready?
nǐ zhǔnbèi hǎo le ma?
Use 吗 (ma) at the end to turn 'You are ready' into a question.
你喜欢茶吗?
Do you like tea?
nǐ xǐhuan chá ma?
The verb 喜欢 (xǐ huan) stays the same; only 吗 (ma) is added.
是,我喜欢。
Yes, I like it.
shì, wǒ xǐhuan.
A natural answer repeats the verb 喜欢 (xǐ huan).
不,我不喜欢。
No, I don't like it.
bù, wǒ bù xǐhuan.
Negate the verb with 不 (bù) before it.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
To make a yes/no question in Mandarin, take a statement and add 吗 (ma) at the end. For example, 你准备好了 (nǐ zhǔnbèi hǎo le) means 'You are ready.' Add 吗 (ma): 你准备好了吗?(nǐ zhǔnbèi hǎo le ma?) means 'Are you ready?' The word order does not change. The verb 喜欢 (xǐhuan) in 你喜欢茶 (nǐ xǐhuan chá) 'You like tea' becomes 你喜欢茶吗?(nǐ xǐhuan chá ma?) 'Do you like tea?' There is no separate word for 'do' or 'are' in these questions.
When to use it
Use 吗 (ma) for neutral yes/no questions when you do not already know the answer. It is common in everyday conversation: 你是学生吗?(nǐ shì xuésheng ma?) 'Are you a student?' 你忙吗?(nǐ máng ma?) 'Are you busy?' To answer, repeat the main verb for yes, and put 不 (bù) before the verb for no. For 是 (shì) questions, answer 是 (shì) or 不是 (bù shì). For other verbs, repeat the verb: 你喜欢茶吗?(nǐ xǐhuan chá ma?) — 喜欢 (xǐhuan) or 不喜欢 (bù xǐhuan).
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你好吗?
How are you?nǐ hǎo ma?我很好,谢谢。你好吗?
I'm fine, thanks. How are you?wǒ hěn hǎo, xièxie. nǐ hǎo ma?我也很好。你喜欢茶吗?
I'm fine too. Do you like tea?wǒ yě hěn hǎo. nǐ xǐhuan chá ma?喜欢。你呢?
Yes, I do. What about you?xǐhuan. nǐ ne?A little context goes a long way
In Mandarin, 吗 (ma) is neutral and polite for most everyday yes/no questions. It is not rude, but it can sound direct if you are asking a stranger for personal information. Adding 请问 (qǐngwèn) 'may I ask' before the question softens it: 请问,你是学生吗?(qǐngwèn, nǐ shì xuésheng ma?). Also, Chinese speakers often answer with the verb rather than a bare 是 (shì) or 不 (bù), which can sound abrupt.
One thing to watch for
Answering 你喜欢茶吗?(nǐ xǐ huan chá ma?) with just 是 (shì) to mean 'Yes, I like it.'
Try this instead: 是 (shì) means 'is/am/are,' not a general 'yes.' For a verb like 喜欢 (xǐhuan), repeat the verb: 喜欢 (xǐhuan) 'Yes, I like it' or 不喜欢 (bù xǐhuan) 'No, I don't like it.' Use 是 (shì) only for questions with 是 (shì), such as 你是学生吗?(nǐ shì xuésheng ma?) — 是 (shì) or 不是 (bù shì).
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you turn 你忙 (nǐ máng) 'You are busy' into a yes/no question?
Show a sample answer
你忙吗?(nǐ máng ma?)
Add 吗 (ma) at the end of the statement. The word order stays the same. 你忙吗?is the natural neutral question.
2How do you answer 你喜欢茶吗?(nǐ xǐ huan chá ma?) if you do like tea?
Show a sample answer
喜欢。(xǐhuan.) or 是,我喜欢。(shì, wǒ xǐhuan.)
Repeating the verb 喜欢 (xǐhuan) is the most natural answer. 是,我喜欢 (shì, wǒ xǐhuan) is also acceptable, but 是 (shì) alone is not enough.
3What is the difference between 你是学生吗?(nǐ shì xuésheng ma?) and 你喜欢茶吗?(nǐ xǐhuan chá ma?) in terms of answering?
Show a sample answer
Answer 你是学生吗?with 是 (shì) or 不是 (bù shì). Answer 你喜欢茶吗?with 喜欢 (xǐhuan) or 不喜欢 (bù xǐhuan).
The answer repeats the main verb of the question. For 是 (shì) questions, the main verb is 是 (shì). For other verbs, repeat that verb.
To ask a yes/no question in Mandarin, keep the sentence and add 吗 (ma) at the end. To answer, repeat the main verb for yes, or put 不 (bù) before it for no. Use 是 (shì) only when the question uses 是 (shì).
