Chinese for Markets: Asking to Weigh Items Separately

Learn Mandarin phrases to ask market vendors to weigh items separately or together, using 分开称, 装一起, and 两个袋子. Practice clear, casual requests for packaging at the market.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

At a busy market, you might buy tomatoes and cucumbers from the same stall but want them weighed and priced separately. In Mandarin, the key verb is 称 (chēng), meaning 'to weigh.' To ask for separate weighing, say 分开称 (fēn kāi chēng). To request items be put in one bag, use 装一起 (zhuāng yì qǐ). If you need two bags, say 两个袋子 (liǎng ge dài zi). This lesson teaches you to combine these into natural requests, such as 这个和那个分开称 (weigh this and that separately). You'll also learn to ask questions like 可以分开称吗? (Can you weigh them separately?) without assuming the vendor's policy. The register is casual and direct, suitable for quick market interactions.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a vendor to weigh two items separately using 分开称.
    • request that items be put together in one bag using 装一起.
    • ask for two bags using 两个袋子.
    • combine demonstratives and nouns to specify which items to separate.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    分开称

    weigh separately

    fēn kāi chēng

Use when you want each type of item weighed and priced on its own. It's a verb phrase; you can add objects before it, e.g., 这些苹果分开称.

    装一起

    put together (in one bag)

    zhuāng yī qǐ

Ask the vendor to place multiple items into a single bag. Often used after weighing, e.g., 都装一起吧.

    两个袋子

    two bags

    liǎng ge dài zi

Request two separate bags. You can say 给我两个袋子 (give me two bags) or 要两个袋子 (I want two bags).

    这个和那个分开

    separate this and that

zhè ge hé nà ge fēn kāi

Point to items while saying this to indicate which ones should be kept apart. Add 称 to specify weighing: 这个和那个分开称.

    可以分开称吗?

    Can you weigh them separately?

kě yǐ fēn kāi chēng ma?

A polite yes/no question. Use 可以...吗? to ask for permission or feasibility. The vendor might say 可以 (yes) or 不行 (no).

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is [item(s)] + 分开称 or [item(s)] + 装一起. For example, 这个和那个分开称 means 'weigh this and that separately.' You can also use 分开 alone as a verb: 这两个分开 (separate these two). To ask a question, add 可以...吗?: 可以分开称吗? (Can you weigh separately?). For bags, use 两个袋子 or 一个袋子. Combine requests: 分开称,然后装两个袋子 (weigh separately, then put in two bags). Note that 称 is the verb 'to weigh'; the noun for scale is 秤 (chèng), but you rarely need it in requests.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when buying multiple types of produce or goods from one vendor and you want separate pricing or packaging. For instance, if you buy apples and oranges but want separate bags, say 苹果和橘子分开称,装两个袋子. If you want everything in one bag, say 都装一起吧. When you're unsure if the vendor can accommodate, start with 可以...吗? to ask politely. Avoid assuming the vendor will separate by default; it's fine to ask. In casual market settings, you can omit 可以 and just say 分开称, but adding 可以...吗? softens the request.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    老板,这个和那个分开称。

Boss, weigh this and that separately.lǎo bǎn, zhè ge hé nà ge fēn kāi chēng.
    B

    好的,分开称。要袋子吗?

Okay, weigh separately. Do you want bags?hǎo de, fēn kāi chēng. yào dài zi ma?
    A

    要,给我两个袋子,装一起也行。

Yes, give me two bags; putting them together is also fine.yào, gěi wǒ liǎng ge dài zi, zhuāng yī qǐ yě xíng.
    B

    没问题,装一起。

No problem, put together.méi wèn tí, zhuāng yī qǐ.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese markets, vendors are usually friendly and flexible, but it's polite to ask before assuming they'll separate items. Using 老板 (lǎo bǎn) to address the vendor is common and casual, not overly formal. If you're unsure, start with 可以...吗? to show respect. Tipping is not customary, and prices are often negotiable, but this lesson focuses on packaging requests. Avoid using 请 (qǐng) excessively; it can sound stiff in quick market exchanges. A simple 谢谢 (xiè xie) after the transaction is sufficient.

    One thing to watch for

Using 分开装 instead of 分开称 when you want separate weighing.

Try this instead: 分开装 means 'package separately,' while 分开称 means 'weigh separately.' If you want separate prices, say 分开称. For example, 请分开称 (please weigh separately) is correct for weighing; 分开装 would be about bagging. To ask for both, say 分开称,分开装.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask a vendor to weigh two different vegetables separately?

    Show a sample answer

    这个和那个分开称。

This uses the pattern [this] and [that] + 分开称. You can also say 这两个分开称 or 可以分开称吗? if you want to be more polite. Any clear request with 分开称 works.

2What phrase means 'put together in one bag'?

    Show a sample answer

    装一起

装一起 is the standard phrase. You can use it as a request: 装一起吧. Alternatively, 放一起 also means 'put together,' but 装一起 specifically implies putting into a bag or container.

3How do you ask for two bags?

    Show a sample answer

    给我两个袋子。

This literally means 'give me two bags.' You can also say 要两个袋子 or 两个袋子,谢谢. The measure word 个 is used for bags. If you need three, say 三个袋子.

    Take this with you

At the market, use 分开称 to weigh items separately, 装一起 to put them in one bag, and 两个袋子 for two bags. Ask politely with 可以...吗? when unsure. Keep it simple and direct.
