Asking Colleagues for Work Favors Politely in Mandarin Chinese
Learn to make polite professional requests in Mandarin using 能不能, 麻烦你, 帮我 and 方便吗, with tone-marked pinyin and workplace examples.

In Chinese workplaces, asking a colleague for help is not just about vocabulary; it is about softening the request so the other person can decline without losing face. This lesson teaches you a small set of patterns that work in offices across mainland China: 能不能 (néng bu néng), 麻烦你 (máfan nǐ), 帮我 (bāng wǒ), and 方便吗 (fāngbiàn ma). You will practice asking someone to look at a report, join a meeting, or send a file, always keeping the request specific and giving the colleague room to say no. The focus is strictly on work tasks, not personal favors.
By the end, you can…
- politely ask a colleague to help with a work task using 能不能 and 帮我.
- soften a request with 麻烦你 and check availability with 方便吗.
- give a clear reason and deadline for a professional request.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Could you help me take a look at this report?
néng bu néng bāng wǒ kàn kan zhè fèn bàogào?
The most common neutral-polite way to ask a colleague for help with a concrete item. 看看 is a soft, brief action.
Sorry to trouble you, could you help me revise it?
máfan nǐ bāng wǒ gǎi yíxià, hǎo ma?
麻烦你 adds politeness and acknowledges the imposition. 一下 makes the request sound smaller and less demanding.
Is now a good time? I'd like to ask you a favor.
nǐ xiànzài fāngbiàn ma? wǒ xiǎng qǐng nǐ bāng ge máng.
方便吗 checks whether the person has time and mental space before you state the request. Use it before a bigger ask.
If it's convenient, could you send it to me this afternoon?
如果方便的话 softens a request with a deadline. It signals that the deadline is a preference, not an order.
Sorry, I have to trouble you again.
bù hǎoyìsi, yòu yào máfan nǐ le.
Use when you have asked this colleague before. It shows awareness of the repeated imposition.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
A reliable pattern is 能不能 + 帮我 + verb + 一下? (néng bu néng bāng wǒ jiǎnchá yíxià?) means 'Could you help me check it?' The 能不能 frame asks about possibility, not obligation. Adding 一下 after the verb makes the action sound quick and bounded. If you need to name a deadline, put it before the request or after it: 如果方便的话,能不能明天中午前帮我看看? (rúguǒ fāngbiàn de huà, néng bu néng míngtiān zhōngwǔ qián bāng wǒ kàn kan?) This keeps the request polite while still being clear about timing.
When to use it
Use 麻烦你 when the task takes real effort or interrupts the colleague, for example 麻烦你帮我整理一下数据 (máfan nǐ bāng wǒ zhěnglǐ yíxià shùjù), 'Sorry to trouble you, help me organize the data.' Use 方便吗 before the request when you are unsure about the person's schedule: 你现在方便吗? For small, routine requests, 能不能帮我……? alone is enough. For requests to a manager or a senior colleague, add 如果方便的话 and avoid direct commands like 你给我看看, which sounds blunt.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Xiao Li, is now a good time? I'd like to ask you a favor.Xiǎo Lǐ, nǐ xiànzài fāngbiàn ma? wǒ xiǎng qǐng nǐ bāng ge máng.
It's fine, go ahead. What is it?Fāngbiàn, nǐ shuō ba. Shénme shì?
Could you help me look at this report? If it's convenient, just get it to me before the end of the day.Néng bu néng bāng wǒ kàn kan zhè fèn bàogào? Rúguǒ fāngbiàn de huà, jīntiān xiàbān qián gěi wǒ jiù xíng.
No problem, I'll look at it this afternoon, and if I have questions I'll ask you.Méi wèntí, wǒ xiàwǔ kàn, yǒu wèntí wǒ zài wèn nǐ.A little context goes a long way
In many mainland Chinese offices, politeness often comes from giving the other person an easy exit rather than from saying 'please' repeatedly. 如果方便的话 and 你现在方便吗? signal that the colleague can decline or suggest another time. Direct commands such as 你给我改一下 can sound like an order from a supervisor, so use them only if you actually have that authority. Regional and workplace norms vary, so watch how your team phrases requests and mirror that level of directness.
One thing to watch for
Using 请帮我 with a bare command, as in 请帮我改这份报告, and treating it as fully polite in every workplace.
Try this instead: 请帮我 is not wrong, but it can sound formal or slightly abrupt when no softening follows. (Néng bu néng bāng wǒ gǎi yíxià zhè fèn bàogào? Wǒ xiàwǔ yào yòng.) This gives the colleague context and a chance to respond.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How would you politely ask a colleague to check a document, using 能不能 and 一下?
Show a sample answer
This uses the core request frame 能不能 + 帮我 + verb + 一下. You could also say 能不能帮我看一下这份文件?; 检查 and 看 both work, with 看 being slightly softer.
2You are not sure whether your colleague is busy. What should you say before making the request?
Show a sample answer
方便吗 checks availability before you state the request. 你现在忙吗? is also possible, but 方便吗 is more common for asking whether someone can take on a task.
3How do you add a soft deadline to a request without sounding demanding?
Show a sample answer
如果方便的话 frames the deadline as a preference. You could also say 今天下午方便吗?, but that changes the focus to the colleague's schedule rather than the task.
For professional requests in Mandarin, lead with 方便吗 or 麻烦你, use 能不能帮我 + verb + 一下, and add 如果方便的话 before any deadline. This keeps the request clear while letting your colleague decline politely.
