Chinese for Badminton: Asking About Skill Level Politely

Learn to ask about badminton experience in Mandarin using 水平, 打了多久, and 业余. Build polite questions to gauge skill when joining a new group.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

When you join a new badminton group in a Chinese-speaking community, you will want to know how experienced the other players are. Directly asking 'Are you good?' can sound blunt or even rude. Instead, Mandarin offers natural, polite ways to inquire about someone's skill level and playing history. This lesson teaches three key terms: 水平 (skill level), 打了多久 (how long have you been playing), and 业余 (amateur). You will learn to form questions that show curiosity without pressure, and to understand common replies. The focus is on spoken interaction in sports circles, where people often use these phrases casually. By the end, you will be able to start a friendly conversation about badminton experience and decide how to fit into the group.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask someone about their badminton skill level using 水平.
    • ask how long someone has been playing using 打了多久.
    • use 业余 to describe amateur status and understand its implications.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    你打羽毛球多久了?

How long have you been playing badminton?

nǐ dǎ yǔmáoqiú duō jiǔ le?

A friendly, open question to ask about someone's experience. Use it after initial greetings.

    你的水平怎么样?

    What's your skill level like?

    nǐ de shuǐpíng zěnme yàng?

Asks about overall ability. It is neutral and common among players. Tone should be curious, not challenging.

    我是业余的,你呢?

    I'm an amateur, and you?

wǒ shì yèyú de, nǐ ne?

Shares your own status first, making it easier to ask about the other person's. 业余 means amateur, not professional.

    你平时打得多吗?

    Do you play often?

nǐ píngshí dǎ de duō ma?

Asks about frequency, which hints at experience. A softer alternative to asking directly about skill.

    我刚开始打,请多指教。

I just started playing, please give me advice.

wǒ gāng kāishǐ dǎ, qǐng duō zhǐjiào.

A humble phrase to use when you are new. It invites help and lowers expectations.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask about skill level, use 水平 (shuǐpíng) as a noun. The pattern is [person] + 的 + 水平 + 怎么样? For example: 你的水平怎么样? (What's your skill level like?) or 他的水平很高。 (His level is high.) You can also ask about duration with 打了多久 (dǎ le duō jiǔ), meaning 'how long have you been playing?' The structure is [subject] + 打 + [sport] + 打了 + 多久. For example: 你打羽毛球打了多久了? (How long have you been playing badminton?) Note that 打了多久 already implies playing a sport; you can omit the sport if context is clear.

    When to use it

Use these questions in casual sports settings, such as before a game or during a break. 水平 is neutral and can be used with strangers or acquaintances. However, asking 你的水平怎么样? directly might feel like a test if said with a serious tone. To soften it, add 大概 (dàgài, roughly) or 方便说吗? (fāngbiàn shuō ma?, is it convenient to say?). For example: 你大概是什么水平? (What's your level roughly?) When you share your own status first with 我是业余的, it signals modesty and makes the other person more comfortable. Avoid asking 你厉害吗? (Are you awesome?) as it can sound childish or sarcastic. In more formal settings, such as with a coach, use 您的水平 (nín de shuǐpíng) to show respect.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你好,我是新来的。你打羽毛球多久了?

Hi, I'm new here. How long have you been playing badminton?nǐ hǎo, wǒ shì xīn lái de. nǐ dǎ yǔmáoqiú duō jiǔ le?
    B

    我打了三年了,不过我是业余的,水平一般。

I've been playing for three years, but I'm an amateur, my level is average.wǒ dǎ le sān nián le, bú guò wǒ shì yèyú de, shuǐpíng yìbān.
    A

    我也是业余的,刚开始打。请多指教。

I'm also an amateur, just started. Please give me advice.wǒ yě shì yèyú de, gāng kāishǐ dǎ. qǐng duō zhǐjiào.
    B

    没问题,一起玩。你平时打得多吗?

No problem, let's play together. Do you play often?méi wèntí, yìqǐ wán. nǐ píngshí dǎ de duō ma?

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese sports circles, modesty is valued. People often downplay their skill even if they are quite good, using phrases like 水平一般 (average level) or 随便打打 (just play casually). Asking about skill directly is acceptable among peers, but it's polite to share your own status first. Avoid boasting; instead, use humble phrases like 请多指教. The term 业余 (amateur) does not carry a negative connotation; it simply means not professional. Many skilled players still call themselves 业余 because they don't compete professionally. When in doubt, ask about frequency or duration rather than direct skill.

    One thing to watch for

Asking '你有多厉害?' (How awesome are you?) as a direct translation of 'How good are you?'

Try this instead: This sounds like a challenge or sarcasm. Instead, use 你的水平怎么样? or 你打得怎么样? (How do you play?) to ask neutrally. For example: 你打羽毛球打得怎么样? is a natural way to ask about skill without pressure.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask someone how long they have been playing badminton?

    Show a sample answer

    你打羽毛球多久了?

This uses 打了多久 with the sport specified. You can also say 你打了多久了? if the sport is clear from context. Both are correct.

2What does 业余 mean in the context of badminton?

    Show a sample answer

    It means amateur, not professional.

业余 describes someone who plays as a hobby, not as a profession. It is a neutral term and does not imply low skill.

3How would you politely ask about someone's skill level using 水平?

    Show a sample answer

    你的水平怎么样?

This is a neutral, common question. To be softer, you could add 大概: 你大概是什么水平? Both are acceptable.

    Take this with you

Use 水平, 打了多久, and 业余 to ask about badminton experience politely. Share your own status first to keep the tone friendly and modest.
