Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In Mandarin Chinese, asking someone how they feel is a key social skill. This lesson teaches you to ask 'Are you okay?' and similar questions, and to respond with empathy. You'll learn phrases like 你还好吗?(Nǐ hái hǎo ma?) and 你怎么了?(Nǐ zěnme le?), and how to reply supportively when someone says they're stressed or upset. Unlike expressing your own feelings, this lesson centers on inquiring about others and showing care. We'll cover tone, politeness, and common pitfalls. By the end, you'll be able to check in on friends and colleagues in natural, appropriate Mandarin.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask someone if they are okay using 你还好吗?
    • ask what's wrong with 你怎么了?
    • respond empathetically to someone who says they are stressed.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    你还好吗?

    Are you okay?

    Nǐ hái hǎo ma?

General check-in when you sense something might be wrong. Use with friends, family, or close colleagues.

    你怎么了?

    What's wrong? / What happened?

    Nǐ zěnme le?

Asks for a reason after noticing someone seems upset. Can sound concerned or slightly probing depending on tone.

    我有点压力。

    I'm a bit stressed.

    Wǒ yǒudiǎn yālì.

A common way to express mild stress. 有点 (yǒudiǎn) softens the statement.

    别太担心。

    Don't worry too much.

    Bié tài dānxīn.

Empathetic response to someone who is stressed or anxious. Use with people you know well.

    需要帮忙吗?

    Do you need help?

    Xūyào bāngmáng ma?

Offers support after someone shares a problem. Shows you care and are willing to assist.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask if someone is okay, use 你还好吗?(Nǐ hái hǎo ma?). The structure is: 你 (you) + 还好 (still okay) + 吗 (question particle). To ask what's wrong, use 你怎么了?(Nǐ zěnme le?). Here, 怎么 (how) + 了 (change of state) asks about a recent change. Respond with empathy using phrases like 别太担心 (Bié tài dānxīn) or 需要帮忙吗?(Xūyào bāngmáng ma?). For example: A: 你还好吗? B: 我有点压力。 A: 别太担心,需要帮忙吗?

    When to use it

Use 你还好吗? when you notice someone seems off but you're not sure why. It's gentle and non-intrusive. Use 你怎么了? when you clearly see something is wrong and want to invite them to share. For empathy, 别太担心 works when someone expresses worry; 需要帮忙吗? offers concrete support. Avoid using these with strangers unless the situation clearly calls for it, as they can feel personal. In formal settings, you might say 您还好吗? (Nín hái hǎo ma?) using the polite 您.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你还好吗?

Are you okay?Nǐ hái hǎo ma?
    B

    我有点压力。

    I'm a bit stressed.Wǒ yǒudiǎn yālì.
    A

    别太担心,需要帮忙吗?

Don't worry too much. Do you need help?Bié tài dānxīn, xūyào bāngmáng ma?
    B

    谢谢,不用了。

    Thanks, no need.Xièxie, bùyòng le.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese culture, asking about feelings can be seen as caring but also intrusive if overdone. Use 你还好吗? with people you know well. For acquaintances, a simple 最近怎么样? (Zuìjìn zěnme yàng? 'How have you been lately?') is safer. Empathy is often shown through practical offers like 需要帮忙吗? rather than verbal reassurance alone. Avoid pressing for details if the person seems reluctant.

    One thing to watch for

Using 你好吗? (Nǐ hǎo ma?) to ask 'Are you okay?' when you sense a problem.

Try this instead: 你好吗? is a generic greeting meaning 'How are you?' and doesn't convey concern. To ask if someone is okay in a worried context, use 你还好吗? (Nǐ hái hǎo ma?). For example, if a friend looks sad, say 你还好吗? not 你好吗?.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Are you okay?' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    你还好吗? (Nǐ hái hǎo ma?)

This phrase directly asks if someone is okay. 你好吗? is a general greeting and less suitable when you're concerned.

2Someone says 我有点压力。 What empathetic response can you give?

    Show a sample answer

别太担心。 (Bié tài dānxīn.) or 需要帮忙吗? (Xūyào bāngmáng ma?)

Both show empathy. 别太担心 offers reassurance, while 需要帮忙吗 offers practical help. Choose based on context.

3What's the difference between 你还好吗? and 你怎么了?

    Show a sample answer

你还好吗? asks 'Are you okay?' generally; 你怎么了? asks 'What's wrong?' seeking a reason.

你还好吗? is a gentle check-in. 你怎么了? is more direct and used when you clearly see something is wrong.

    Take this with you

Use 你还好吗? to gently ask if someone is okay, and 你怎么了? to ask what's wrong. Respond with empathy using 别太担心 or 需要帮忙吗?. Remember to match politeness to your relationship.
