Asking What People Eat on Holidays in Mandarin: Learning from Local Knowledge

Learn to ask Chinese speakers what people eat on holidays, understand their answers, and follow up politely. Focuses on gathering information from others rather than explaining customs yourself.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

This lesson teaches you to ask a specific question in Mandarin: What do people eat here on holidays? The goal is not to lecture about customs but to learn from the people you meet. You will practice a natural question, common answers, and follow-up questions. The key pattern is 这里的人过节吃什么? (Zhèlǐ de rén guòjié chī shénme?). You will also learn to ask about local specialties and respond when someone explains a holiday food. Pay attention to the difference between 过节 (guòjié, to celebrate a holiday) and 节日 (jiérì, holiday as a noun). Use 这里 (zhèlǐ, here) to ask about the current place, and 你们 (nǐmen, you plural) when asking a group. This lesson uses simplified Chinese and pinyin with tone marks.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask what people eat here on holidays using a natural Mandarin question.
    • understand and respond to simple answers about holiday foods.
    • ask follow-up questions about when and why a food is eaten.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    这里的人过节吃什么?

What do people here eat on holidays?

Zhèlǐ de rén guòjié chī shénme?

Use this when you want to learn from locals in a specific place. 这里 means here.

    你们过节一般吃什么?

What do you usually eat on holidays?

    Nǐmen guòjié yìbān chī shénme?

Use 你们 to ask a group. 一般 means usually, making the question less absolute.

    有什么特别的节日食物吗?

Are there any special holiday foods?

Yǒu shénme tèbié de jiérì shíwù ma?

Asks about special foods. 节日食物 means holiday food as a category.

    这个是什么时候吃的?

    When is this eaten?

Zhège shì shénme shíhou chī de?

Follow-up question about timing. 什么时候 means when.

    为什么过节要吃这个?

Why do people eat this on holidays?

    Wèishénme guòjié yào chī zhège?

Asks for the reason. 要 here means need to or should, common in explanations.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is Place + 的人 + 过节 + 吃什么? For example, 这里的人过节吃什么? (What do people here eat on holidays?) You can replace 这里 with 你们 (you plural) to ask the person directly: 你们过节吃什么? To ask about a specific holiday, put it before 过节: 春节你们吃什么? (What do you eat during Spring Festival?) The verb 吃 (chī, eat) stays at the end before 什么. This word order is different from English, where the question word comes first. In Mandarin, 什么 stays in the position of the object.

    When to use it

Use these questions when you are genuinely trying to learn from someone, not when you want to show off knowledge. For example, at a friend's home during a festival, ask 你们过节一般吃什么? Then listen for food names. If you hear 饺子 (jiǎozi, dumplings), you can follow up with 这个是什么时候吃的? Avoid asking 这里的人过节吃什么? about your own hometown if you are from there; it sounds odd. Instead, ask about the place you are visiting. If someone asks you back, you can say 我们那边过节吃... (In our place, we eat... on holidays).

    Answering and following up

When someone answers, they may say 我们吃饺子 (We eat dumplings) or 我们吃月饼 (We eat mooncakes). To keep learning, use 还有呢? (Hái yǒu ne?, What else?) or 还有别的吗? (Hái yǒu bié de ma?, Is there anything else?). To ask about a specific food you heard, repeat it and ask 这个是什么时候吃的? If you do not understand a food name, say 这个是什么? (Zhège shì shénme?, What is this?) and 怎么做? (Zěnme zuò?, How is it made?). These follow-ups show real interest and keep the conversation going.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    请问,这里的人过节吃什么?

Excuse me, what do people here eat on holidays?Qǐngwèn, zhèlǐ de rén guòjié chī shénme?
    B

    我们过节一般吃饺子,有时候也吃鱼。

We usually eat dumplings on holidays, and sometimes fish too.Wǒmen guòjié yìbān chī jiǎozi, yǒu shíhou yě chī yú.
    A

    为什么过节要吃鱼呢?

Why do people eat fish on holidays?Wèishénme guòjié yào chī yú ne?
    B

    因为鱼听起来像“余”,意思是年年有余。

Because fish sounds like 'surplus', meaning abundance year after year.Yīnwèi yú tīng qǐlái xiàng “yú”, yìsi shì niánnián yǒu yú.

A little context goes a long way

Asking about holiday food is a common way to show interest in local culture. In many Chinese-speaking contexts, people enjoy explaining food traditions, but avoid asking in a way that sounds like a test. Use 请问 (qǐngwèn, may I ask) to soften the question. If someone invites you to eat, accepting is polite, but you can decline gently with 谢谢,我吃饱了 (Xièxie, wǒ chī bǎo le, Thanks, I'm full). Regional differences are significant: what people eat for Spring Festival varies by region, so ask about the specific place rather than generalizing about all of China.

    One thing to watch for

Using 节日吃什么? without 过节 or a subject, which sounds incomplete.

Try this instead: Say 你们过节吃什么? or 这里的人过节吃什么? Include 过节 (guòjié) to make the holiday context clear. For example, 你们过节一般吃什么? is natural and complete.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask a group of friends what they usually eat on holidays?

    Show a sample answer

    你们过节一般吃什么?

This uses 你们 for a group, 过节 for celebrating a holiday, and 一般 to mean usually. You could also say 你们过节吃什么? without 一般, which is also correct but less specific about frequency.

2You hear someone say 我们吃月饼. What follow-up question asks when this is eaten?

    Show a sample answer

    这个是什么时候吃的?

This question asks about timing. You could also ask 什么时候吃月饼? which is also correct. The version with 这个 is useful when you want to refer to the food just mentioned.

3How do you ask why people eat a certain food on holidays?

    Show a sample answer

    为什么过节要吃这个?

This uses 为什么 (why) and 要 (need to/should) to ask about the reason. You could also say 为什么过节吃这个? without 要, which is slightly less common but still understandable.

    Take this with you

To learn from others about holiday food, ask 这里的人过节吃什么? or 你们过节一般吃什么? Then follow up with 这个是什么时候吃的? and 为什么过节要吃这个? Listen for food names and ask 还有呢? to keep learning.
