How to Apologize Sincerely in Mandarin Chinese: Taking Responsibility for Serious Mistakes

Learn to say 'I'm really sorry, it was my fault' in Mandarin and make amends for serious errors, using 对不起, 抱歉, 是我的错, and repair phrases with pinyin and tone marks.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When a mistake causes a problem, acknowledge what happened and discuss an appropriate way to make amends. This lesson practices 对不起, strengthens the apology with 真的, and uses 是我的错 to take responsibility. It teaches the exact recorded phrases for the lost-book example and a concrete offer to replace it. 不好意思 can also express apology in context; serious problems often need more explanation and action than a brief apology alone.

    By the end, you can…

    • say 'I'm really sorry, it was my fault' in Mandarin.
    • take responsibility and offer to make amends for a serious mistake.
    • choose between 对不起, 抱歉, and 不好意思 by seriousness.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    真的对不起,是我的错。

I'm really sorry, it was my fault.

zhēn de duìbuqǐ, shì wǒ de cuò

The core sincere apology. 真的 adds sincerity; 是我的错 names the fault as yours.

    非常抱歉,这是我的责任。

I am very sorry; this is my responsibility.

fēicháng bàoqiàn, zhè shì wǒ de zérèn

Slightly formal and serious; good for work or when you owe a clear explanation.

    我真的很抱歉,我会想办法弥补。

I'm truly sorry; I will find a way to make it right.

wǒ zhēn de hěn bàoqiàn, wǒ huì xiǎng bànfǎ míbǔ

Adds a promise of amends. 弥补 (míbǔ) means to make up for a loss or harm.

    这件事怪我,对不起。

This is on me; I'm sorry.

zhè jiàn shì guài wǒ, duìbuqǐ

怪 (guài) here means 'to blame'; 怪我 wǒ means 'blame me,' a direct way to own fault.

    请给我一个机会改正。

Please give me a chance to correct it.

qǐng gěi wǒ yí ge jīhuì gǎizhèng

A repair request after a serious error; 改正 (gǎizhèng) means to correct a fault.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To own a fault, use 是我的错 (shì wǒ de cuò, it is my mistake) or 怪我 (guài wǒ, blame me). The pattern 是 + person + 的错 names who is responsible: 是我的错 'it's my fault,' 是他的错 'it's his fault.' For amends, use 我会…… (wǒ huì…, I will…) plus an action: 我会赔偿 (wǒ huì péicháng, I will compensate), 我会改正 (wǒ huì gǎizhèng, I will correct it). Notice Chinese does not change verb endings for tense; 会 (huì) marks a promise about the future.

    When to use it

Use these sentences when you need to acknowledge a mistake and discuss making amends. 真的对不起,是我的错 explicitly takes responsibility; 非常抱歉 expresses a strong apology. 不好意思 can also express apology, depending on context. For a serious mistake, explain what happened and what you will do rather than relying on one apology word alone.

    Tone and sincerity

Make the responsibility and proposed repair clear. The recorded dialogue names the lost book, acknowledges the mistake, and asks for a chance to make amends. Use a promise only when you can follow through; a particular pitch or eye-contact pattern is not a rule for sincerity.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    小王,真的对不起,是我的错。我弄丢了你的书。

Xiao Wang, I'm really sorry, it was my fault. I lost your book.Xiǎo Wáng, zhēn de duìbuqǐ, shì wǒ de cuò. Wǒ nòngdiū le nǐ de shū.
    B

    那本书很重要。你打算怎么办?

That book is very important. What do you plan to do?Nà běn shū hěn zhòngyào. Nǐ dǎsuàn zěnme bàn?
    A

    我会买一本新的还你,请给我一个机会弥补。

I will buy a new one and return it to you; please give me a chance to make it right.Wǒ huì mǎi yì běn xīn de huán nǐ, qǐng gěi wǒ yí ge jīhuì míbǔ.
    B

    好,我接受你的道歉。下次请小心。

Okay, I accept your apology. Please be careful next time.Hǎo, wǒ jiēshòu nǐ de dàoqiàn. Xià cì qǐng xiǎoxīn.

A little context goes a long way

An apology and a repair are separate parts of the exchange. The dialogue gives an acknowledgment of fault and a request to make amends. The other speaker accepts the apology and asks for care next time. Match any proposed action to the actual problem rather than treating a phrase as a guarantee of forgiveness.

    One thing to watch for

Giving only a brief apology when the other person needs an acknowledgment of fault and a concrete repair.

Try this instead: The taught sentence 真的对不起,是我的错 makes responsibility explicit. 不好意思 can express apology, but for a serious mistake explain the fault and appropriate next action instead of assuming that any single phrase is enough.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I'm really sorry, it was my fault' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    真的对不起,是我的错。

真的 adds sincerity, and 是我的错 explicitly names the fault as yours. 非常抱歉,这是我的责任 is also valid in formal contexts.

2Which taught phrase expresses a strong apology: 非常抱歉 or a brief 不好意思?

    Show a sample answer

    非常抱歉。

非常抱歉 expresses a strong apology. 不好意思 can also express apology in context; this exercise practices the more explicit wording taught here rather than declaring the other expression invalid.

3Translate: 'I will compensate your loss.'

    Show a sample answer

    我会赔偿你的损失。

会 marks the future promise, 赔偿 means compensate, and 你的损失 means your loss. 我会弥补你的损失 is also acceptable.

    Take this with you

Use 真的对不起,是我的错 to acknowledge your fault, then explain an appropriate action you can actually take. The sincerity and usefulness of an apology depend on the whole exchange, not a rigid ranking of apology words.
