Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In Chinese, the meaning of an adverb depends as much on its position as on the word itself. Frequency words such as 总是 (zǒng shì, always) and 一直 (yì zhí, continuously) normally go before the verb, while time phrases often go before the verb or at the start of the sentence. This lesson gives you three concrete patterns for describing habits and routines, with special attention to expressing 'all the time' in natural Mandarin. You will also learn how to ask staff simple questions about schedules and availability without assuming specific policies.

    By the end, you can…

    • place frequency adverbs such as 总是 and 一直 correctly before the verb.
    • use time phrases at the beginning or before the verb to describe when something happens.
    • ask a staff member whether something is available all the time using a natural question.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    她总是很早到。

    She always arrives early.

tā zǒng shì hěn zǎo dào

总是 (zǒng shì) means 'always' and goes before the verb phrase 很早到. Use this for repeated habits.

    我常常坐地铁上班。

I often take the subway to work.

wǒ cháng cháng zuò dì tiě shàng bān

常常 (cháng cháng) means 'often'. It comes before the verb phrase 坐地铁上班.

    他每天七点起床。

He gets up at seven every day.

tā měi tiān qī diǎn qǐ chuáng

Time phrases like 每天七点 (every day at seven) go before the verb. 每天 can also move to the sentence start.

    这里一直很忙。

It is busy here all the time.

zhè lǐ yì zhí hěn máng

一直 (yì zhí) means 'continuously' or 'all the time'. It often describes an ongoing state, not a repeated habit.

    请问,你们一直营业吗?

Excuse me, are you open all the time?

qǐng wèn, nǐ men yì zhí yíng yè ma

A polite question to staff. 一直 here asks whether the service is continuous. The answer depends on the actual place, so listen for specific hours.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Pattern 1: Subject + frequency adverb + verb phrase. Frequency adverbs such as 总是 (always), 常常 (often), 经常 (regularly), and 有时候 (sometimes) normally come after the subject and before the verb. Example: 她总是很早到。 (She always arrives early.) Pattern 2: Time phrase + subject + verb phrase, or subject + time phrase + verb phrase. Example: 每天七点他起床。 or 他每天七点起床。 (He gets up at seven every day.) Pattern 3: Subject + 一直 + verb phrase. 一直 means 'continuously' or 'all the time' and often describes an ongoing state. Example: 这里一直很忙。 (It is busy here all the time.) Note that 总是 describes repeated events, while 一直 describes an uninterrupted state or action. They are not interchangeable in every sentence.

    When to use it

Use 总是 when you mean 'always' as a habit: 她总是迟到。 (She is always late.) Use 一直 when you mean 'all the time' as a continuous state: 他一直很忙。 (He is busy all the time.) Use 常常 or 经常 for 'often': 我常常喝咖啡。 (I often drink coffee.) Time phrases such as 每天 (every day), 早上 (morning), and 七点 (seven o'clock) usually go before the verb, and 每天 can also go at the beginning for emphasis. When asking staff, keep the question simple: 请问,你们一直营业吗? (Excuse me, are you open all the time?) This asks about continuity, not a specific policy. Listen for the actual answer rather than assuming.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    请问,你们一直营业吗?

Excuse me, are you open all the time?qǐng wèn, nǐ men yì zhí yíng yè ma
    B

    不是,我们早上九点到晚上九点营业。

No, we are open from nine in the morning to nine in the evening.bú shì, wǒ men zǎo shang jiǔ diǎn dào wǎn shang jiǔ diǎn yíng yè
    A

    哦,那我常常晚上八点来,可以吗?

Oh, then I often come at eight in the evening, is that okay?ó, nà wǒ cháng cháng wǎn shang bā diǎn lái, kě yǐ ma
    B

    可以,八点我们一直开门。

Yes, at eight we are always open.kě yǐ, bā diǎn wǒ men yì zhí kāi mén

A little context goes a long way

In mainland Mandarin, 一直 is common in everyday speech for 'all the time' as a continuous state. In some southern varieties, 一直 may be replaced by 一路 in casual talk, but 一直 is widely understood. When speaking with staff, 请问 softens the question and is appropriate in shops, hotels, and offices. Avoid assuming that 总是 and 一直 are interchangeable: 他总是很忙 suggests he is often busy, while 他一直很忙 suggests he is busy continuously. Register is neutral in these examples; adding 请问 raises politeness.

    One thing to watch for

Placing the frequency adverb after the verb, as in 她到总是很早.

Try this instead: Frequency adverbs like 总是 go before the verb phrase: 她总是很早到。 (She always arrives early.) The verb 到 comes at the end of the main predicate here, so 总是 must precede it.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Translate: 'I often drink tea.' Use 常常.

    Show a sample answer

    我常常喝茶。

常常 goes after the subject 我 and before the verb phrase 喝茶. 我喝茶常常 is not standard in this meaning.

2Where does 每天 usually go in 'He gets up at seven every day'?

    Show a sample answer

    他每天七点起床。 or 每天他七点起床。

Time phrases can go before the verb or at the start. Both are common; the first is more neutral.

3Choose 总是 or 一直: 'She is always busy.' Which is more natural for a continuous state?

    Show a sample answer

    她一直很忙。

一直 fits a continuous state. 她总是很忙 is also possible and means she is often busy, but 一直 emphasizes continuity.

    Take this with you

Put frequency adverbs like 总是 and 常常 before the verb. Use 一直 for 'all the time' as a continuous state. Time phrases usually go before the verb or at the start. Ask staff with 请问, and listen for their actual answer.
