Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

In any discussion, showing that you have heard the other person is key to keeping the conversation respectful. In Mandarin, this often means using a phrase that acknowledges their point, followed by a contrast word like 但是 (dànshì) or 不过 (bùguò). This lesson teaches you elementary phrases to say 'I understand that...' and then politely introduce your own perspective. You will learn set expressions, a useful pattern, and see them in a short dialogue. By the end, you will be able to disagree without sounding dismissive, which is especially valued in Chinese communication.

    By the end, you can…

    • acknowledge someone's point using phrases like 我明白 (wǒ míngbai) or 我理解 (wǒ lǐjiě).
    • politely introduce a different view with 但是 (dànshì) or 不过 (bùguò).

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我明白你的意思。

    I understand what you mean.

    wǒ míngbai nǐ de yìsi

Use this to show you have grasped the other person's point before responding. It is neutral and respectful.

    我理解你的想法。

I understand your way of thinking.

    wǒ lǐjiě nǐ de xiǎngfǎ

Slightly more formal than 我明白你的意思. Use in discussions where you want to sound thoughtful.

    你说得对,但是……

    You're right, but...

    nǐ shuō de duì, dànshì...

A common way to agree partially and then present a contrasting point. The 但是 introduces your view.

    我同意一部分,不过……

I agree with part of it, however...

    wǒ tóngyì yí bùfen, bùguò...

Use when you agree with some aspects but want to add a different perspective. 不过 is softer than 但是.

    从另一个角度看,……

    From another angle, ...

cóng lìng yí gè jiǎodù kàn, ...

This phrase introduces an alternative viewpoint without directly contradicting. It is polite and common in discussions.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

A key pattern for respectful disagreement is: Acknowledge + 但是/不过 + Your view. For example, 我明白你的意思,但是我觉得这个方案有问题。 (I understand what you mean, but I think this plan has problems.) You can also use 不过 instead of 但是 to sound softer: 我理解你的想法,不过我们可以再讨论一下。 (I understand your way of thinking, however we can discuss it again.) Notice that the acknowledgment comes first, which shows respect. The contrast word then signals that you will offer a different opinion. This pattern works in many situations, from casual chats to meetings.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you want to disagree politely. For instance, if a colleague suggests a plan you are not sure about, you can say: 你说得对,但是我们需要考虑成本。 (You're right, but we need to consider the cost.) If a friend shares an opinion, you might respond: 我明白你的意思,不过我的看法有点不同。 (I understand what you mean, however my view is a bit different.) Avoid using these phrases if you completely agree; in that case, simply say 我同意 (wǒ tóngyì). Also, in very formal settings, you can replace 但是 with 然而 (rán'ér), but for elementary learners, 但是 and 不过 are more common and natural.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    我觉得我们应该马上开始这个项目。

I think we should start this project immediately.wǒ juéde wǒmen yīnggāi mǎshàng kāishǐ zhège xiàngmù.
    B

    我明白你的意思,但是我们需要更多时间准备。

I understand what you mean, but we need more time to prepare.wǒ míngbai nǐ de yìsi, dànshì wǒmen xūyào gèng duō shíjiān zhǔnbèi.
    A

    你说得对,不过如果太晚开始,可能会错过机会。

You're right, however if we start too late, we might miss the opportunity.nǐ shuō de duì, bùguò rúguǒ tài wǎn kāishǐ, kěnéng huì cuòguò jīhuì.
    B

    从另一个角度看,准备充分可以减少风险。

From another angle, being fully prepared can reduce risks.cóng lìng yí gè jiǎodù kàn, zhǔnbèi chōngfèn kěyǐ jiǎnshǎo fēngxiǎn.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese communication, directly saying 'you are wrong' can be seen as confrontational. Acknowledging the other person's point first, even if you disagree, helps maintain harmony. Phrases like 我明白你的意思 are not just polite fillers; they show you are listening. However, in very close relationships, people may be more direct. Also, 不过 is generally softer than 但是, so choose based on how formal or sensitive the situation is.

    One thing to watch for

Learners often use 但是 immediately without acknowledging the other person, which can sound abrupt.

Try this instead: Always try to include an acknowledgment first. For example, instead of just saying 但是我觉得不对 (but I think it's wrong), say 我明白你的意思,但是我觉得不对 (I understand what you mean, but I think it's wrong). This small addition makes your disagreement more respectful.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'I understand your point, but I have a different opinion' in Chinese?

    Show a sample answer

    我明白你的意思,但是我的看法不同。

This answer uses the pattern: acknowledgment (我明白你的意思) + contrast (但是) + your view (我的看法不同). Other variations like 我理解你的想法,不过我的看法不同 are also correct.

2Which phrase is softer for introducing a contrasting view: 但是 or 不过?

    Show a sample answer

    不过

不过 is generally considered softer and more polite than 但是. Both are correct, but 不过 is often used to make the disagreement sound less direct.

    3What does 从另一个角度看 mean?

    Show a sample answer

    From another angle

This phrase is used to introduce an alternative perspective. It is a polite way to shift the discussion without directly contradicting.

    Take this with you

To disagree respectfully in Chinese, first acknowledge the other person's point with phrases like 我明白你的意思, then use 但是 or 不过 to introduce your view. This keeps the conversation constructive.
