Every other consonant in Zulu (and in English, and in most of the world's languages) is made by pushing air out of the lungs. Clicks aren't a variation on that. They're made by trapping air between two points of contact in the mouth and pulling the tongue down to create suction, then releasing it. No lung air is involved at all. Zulu has three of these as full, ordinary consonants, spelled right into the alphabet, and they change what a word means exactly the way any other consonant does. Apps built on speech recognition trained mostly on lung-powered languages aren't slightly weak on clicks. They frequently have no model for the sound at all.

Three Clicks, Three Places, One Mechanism
Zulu writes its three clicks with ordinary Latin letters: c for a dental click (tongue against the back of the upper teeth, the sound English speakers make for "tsk-tsk"), q for an alveolar click (tongue against the ridge behind the teeth, closer to a cork popping), and x for a lateral click (tongue released from the side, the sound used informally in English to urge on a horse). All three share the same production method: a velaric ingressive airstream, air pulled inward using the tongue alone. That's why linguists group them as one family of consonant despite sounding so different from each other.
That shared mechanism is also what makes them hard for anything trained mostly on pulmonic (lung-powered) speech. Cela, with the dental click, means "to ask" or "please." Qala, with the alveolar click, means "to begin" or "start." Two real words, everyday vocabulary, distinguished at the very front by which kind of click opens them. Not a rare edge case — a normal part of speaking Zulu in a sentence.

Not a Weak Signal — Frequently No Signal
Most sounds that are "hard" for an app are hard in the way an unfamiliar accent is hard: the acoustic model has seen something like it and can usually still make a guess. Clicks are a different kind of problem. A speech-to-text system trained overwhelmingly on languages that don't use clicks at all has no example of the sound in its training data, not a poor one. It's being asked to recognize a category of consonant it has effectively never encountered. The typical failure isn't a slightly-off transcription; it's the click getting dropped, misheard as silence, or mapped onto whatever pulmonic consonant happens to sound nearest to it, which changes the word.
This is a different kind of obstacle from clicks getting portrayed as exotic or decorative. Zulu speakers aren't doing something unusual by using them; they're just using their language normally. The mismatch is entirely on the recognition side: a system built around languages that never developed this airstream mechanism has nothing to fall back on when it hears one.

What Zulu Learners Actually Need
Feedback that can register a click happened at all, not a system that silently drops it or maps it onto the nearest lung-powered consonant it does recognize. If your speech-to-text pipeline was never trained on click languages, this isn't a tuning problem — it's a coverage gap.
Practice telling the three click types apart, not just producing "a click" in general. Dental (c), alveolar (q), and lateral (x) are three separate consonants doing three separate jobs — cela and qala aren't the same word said two ways, they're two different words.
Real conversation, not read-aloud drills. Reading Zulu text and sounding out where the clicks are written tells you where they belong in spelling. It doesn't tell you whether the click you actually produced was clean, or whether you can hear the difference between the three types when someone else says them back to you.
Room to build the mechanism from scratch if it's new to you. Clicks aren't a variant pronunciation of a sound English already has — for a learner without click-language background, this is a genuinely new articulation, closer to learning a new consonant than adjusting an accent.
