Most Icelandic learning content leans on the same warning: the grammar is hard, cases and strong verbs and all. That's true, and it's also the wrong thing to be scared of first. The bigger problem for anyone trying to actually speak Icelandic is a set of pronunciation contrasts that don't show up as different letters on the page, so an app checking whether you typed or read the right word never has to notice you got the sound wrong.
The problem
A puff of air in the wrong place changes the word
Icelandic doesn't distinguish stops the way English does. English cares about voicing — b is voiced, p isn't, and that's most of what separates "bear" from "pear." Icelandic doesn't really use voicing at all. Instead it cares about aspiration: whether a puff of breath follows the consonant. Bera (to carry) and pera (pear, or a lightbulb) are a real minimal pair, and the only thing keeping them apart is that puff of air on the p.
That much is at least a known problem — English speakers get warned about aspirated consonants in plenty of languages. What's specifically Icelandic is where else that puff of air can land. In words like nótt (night) or epli (apple), the breath shows up before the stop closure, not after it — nótt is pronounced closer to "nouht," epli closer to "ehplee." Linguists call this preaspiration, and it's one of the rarer sound patterns in the world's languages: most languages that aspirate, aspirate after the consonant, the way English does in "pin." Icelandic runs it in reverse, and does it as a matter of course in ordinary words, not as some marginal exception.
The word kaka ("cake") shows the contrast against its near-twin kakka (informally, "to poop") about as cleanly as a minimal pair gets. Single k, long vowel, no preaspiration — kaka. Double the k in spelling and everything shifts at once: the vowel shortens and a puff of breath appears before the k, so kakka comes out closer to "kahka." One doubled letter, three separate pronunciation changes, none of them visible if you're just reading the word off a page.

That kaka/kakka pair points at a second, related pattern: Icelandic vowel length and consonant length trade off against each other, not independently. A stressed vowel is long when it's followed by a single consonant, and short when it's followed by a doubled consonant or a cluster. Koma (to come) has a long o; komma (a comma) has a short one. Vinur (friend) has a long i; vinnur (the verb form "works," as in "hún vinnur," she works) has a short one. The consonant in each pair looks like the only thing that changed in spelling, but the vowel is doing at least as much of the work out loud, and it's doing it in the opposite direction of what a lot of learners guess.
Put the two patterns together and you get why apps built around reading Icelandic text back struggle to prepare anyone for hearing it spoken. The spelling shows you a doubled letter. It doesn't show you that the vowel in front of it just got shorter, or that a stop in that position picked up a puff of breath before it fires. You're expected to produce, and recognize, both of those changes automatically, off a spelling system that only hints at one of them.

None of this is exotic once you've heard it enough times — Icelanders aren't doing anything effortful when they preaspirate a doubled k. The problem is entirely about how someone gets from "reading Icelandic" to "producing these contrasts correctly and hearing them in real time," and that's a listening-and-speaking skill, not a spelling one.
A flashcard app that shows you kaka and kakka side by side, with the doubled letter highlighted, is teaching you to recognize a written pattern. It isn't teaching you to hear the difference between "kaːka" and "kahka" spoken at normal speed with no text in front of you, and it isn't checking whether you can reproduce that difference yourself. Text-based apps and transcript-driven speech tools have the same blind spot for the same reason: if the transcription step just needs to land on a correctly spelled word, "kaka" and "kakka" both transcribe fine even if you got the vowel length and the preaspiration wrong, because the transcript doesn't encode either one.
What actually helps is practice that engages with the sound itself: hearing minimal pairs spoken at conversational speed, attempting them out loud, and getting told specifically when the vowel length or the preaspiration timing was off — not just whether the words you said were real Icelandic words in some general sense.
