    Learn Hausa by Speaking: Why Most Apps Get Hausa Wrong

    Hausa has two consonants that are pulled inward instead of pushed out. Most speech recognition systems have almost no training data for that mechanism at all — not a weak model of it, close to none.

    Most Hausa learning content warns you about the tone system, or the fact that it's written in the Latin alphabet now rather than Ajami script, and leaves it there. Neither of those is where an app trained on typical consonant sounds actually falls down. The real gap is a pair of consonants Hausa makes with air moving the opposite direction from almost every sound English speakers, or most speech models, have ever produced.

    The approach

    Air pulled in, not pushed out

    English consonants, like the vast majority of the world's languages, run on a pulmonic airstream: your lungs push air out, and your mouth shapes it into sounds. Hausa has two consonants that don't work that way. ɓ and ɗ are implosives — made by closing off the vocal tract, then lowering the larynx to create suction, so air is briefly pulled inward as the consonant releases, not pushed out. It's sometimes described as a soft "gulping" quality on the consonant, and it's a completely different production mechanism from a plain b or d, not a stylistic variant of one.

    These aren't marginal or optional sounds. Hausa runs a genuine three-way series at the bilabial position: voiceless p, voiced b, and implosive ɓ, all distinct phonemes that can start different words. Academic phonetic work on Hausa documents real words built on each implosive: giɓi, "a gap left by a missing tooth," carries the bilabial implosive ɓ; riɗi, "sesame seed," carries the alveolar implosive ɗ. Say either one with a plain b or d instead of the implosive and you haven't mispronounced a word slightly, you've swapped the sound for a different consonant the language treats as separate.

    The approach

    Not the same thing as an ejective, even though both get called "glottalic"

    If you've read anything about Amharic, you may have run into a similar-sounding warning about ejective consonants. It's worth being precise about why Hausa's implosives aren't a repeat of that. Both ejectives and implosives are classed as "glottalic" consonants, meaning both involve the glottis rather than the lungs as the air-moving mechanism, but they run in opposite directions. An ejective (Amharic's k', t', etc.) is glottalic egressive: the glottis closes, then rises, compressing air and forcing it sharply outward, producing a popping sound. An implosive is glottalic ingressive: the glottis lowers instead of rising, pulling air inward, producing something closer to a soft gulp than a pop. Same broad category of "not powered by your lungs," opposite direction of airflow, genuinely different sound to produce and to hear.

    The problem

    This isn't a spelling issue the way some other languages' hard sounds are. Standard Hausa orthography already gives ɓ and ɗ their own letters, so a reader can see exactly where an implosive belongs in a word, unlike, say, a language where stress or vowel quality goes unmarked in ordinary text. The problem sits one level downstream of the text: in the acoustic model doing the actual listening.

    Speech recognition systems learn what a sound is supposed to sound like from training data, and the overwhelming majority of that data, across the overwhelming majority of languages represented in it, is pulmonic. A system with little or no exposure to glottalic ingressive consonants doesn't have a weak model of an implosive to fall back on — it may not have a meaningful model of the sound category at all. Getting Hausa speech recognition to work reliably has taken dedicated, recent academic effort rather than falling out of general-purpose models for free: a 2024 paper in the International Journal of Speech Technology (Abubakar, Gupta, and Vekkot) built a diacritic-aware, large-vocabulary recognition system specifically for Hausa and reported it as a meaningful advance over generic approaches — the kind of language-specific work most consumer apps haven't done, and the reason a system tuned mostly on pulmonic-consonant languages shouldn't be assumed to already handle ɓ and ɗ correctly.

    The approach

    What that means for actually learning to speak it

    A flashcard app that shows you giɓi and asks you to recall its meaning is testing vocabulary recall. It isn't testing whether you can produce the implosive that makes giɓi a real word instead of a mispronounced one, and it isn't listening closely enough to tell you if you didn't. A transcript-matching app has the same blind spot from a different angle: if its recognizer collapses ɓ toward the nearest pulmonic sound it does have a model for, your attempt can get accepted as correct without the implosive ever having been checked.

    What actually helps is practice that engages the sound itself — hearing ɓ and ɗ produced by an actual speaker, attempting them yourself, and getting told specifically whether the airstream mechanism was right, not just whether the word you said was recognizable as something close to it.
